Six closed Thomas Cook stores in Berkshire could be saved after a successful takeover.

Independent travel agent Hays Travel stepped in to buy 555 stores from Thomas Cook after the firm collapsed in September.

Hays has also recruited more than 400 Thomas Cook staff and could offer roles to more of the troubled company's former workers.

All of the company's high street branches closed with immediate effect on September 23 when the news broke the firm had gone into administration .

The collapse also saw flights cancelled and holidaymakers temporarily stranded abroad until the CAA stepped in to fly them home.

The takeover will boost the number of Hays stores on the high street.

The deal involves re-opening branches that will complement Hays Travel’s 190 shops, with nine stores in the north east already welcoming customers.

Hays has no branches in Berkshire, with the nearest being in Basingstoke.

John and Irene Hays, managing director and group chair of Hays Travel, said: "Thomas Cook was a much-loved brand employing talented people.

"We look forward to working with many of them."

On Wednesday, October 9 David Chapman, the official receiver of Thomas Cook, said: "I am pleased to announce we have reached an agreement with Hays Travel to acquire Thomas Cook's entire UK retail estate, comprising 555 stores across the country.

"This represents an important step in the liquidation process, as we seek to realise the company's assets."

Thomas Cook branches in Berkshire which look set to be saved are:
