Cattle processing volume up, price recovery slow

The Executive Director of the Missouri Beef Industry Council said processors are now handling nearly the same volume of cattle they did a year ago.

But Mark Russell tells Brownfield it will take months for producers to fully recover from delays caused by COVID-19.

“It’s going to take a period of time,” he said. “You know, we have a back log of 60, 70, 80, 90 days of cattle that couldn’t get into the packers.”

He says baring a second wave of the pandemic causing processing closures, the cattle market should return to normal late this year.

“I think this fall-winter we’ll start seeing some what I’d say more normal types of markets than what we’ve ever seen in the last six months,” Russell said.

The USDA reports April and May steer prices fell more than twenty-five dollars below a year ago.
