The strike at the Exceldor poultry factory in St-Anselme has come to an end after a month-long work stoppage.

Union members at the factory voted 66 per cent in favour of accepting the settlement organized by mediators from the Ministry of Labour, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union announced Saturday.

The 550 workers at Exceldor, in Chaudière-Appalaches, now have a new six-year collective agreement that will be retroactive to Aug. 1, 2020.

Employees negotiated a salary hike of 19.75 per cent that will reach its maximum in 2025. It was less than what the union was seeking.

“But it’s still one of the highest collective agreements among chicken slaughterhouses ever negotiated,” union spokesperson Roxane Larouche said. “In that sense, it’s a victory for the workers.”

Improved working conditions and labour relations were also negotiated.

The workers had been on strike since May 23, leading to more than one million chickens being euthanized.

The factory will ramp up production slowly. It will take roughly 10 days to return to full capacity, union members said.
