The drive-through store on Eboracum Way, York, which is situated at a Travelodge, has been given a one-star rating by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

The FSA looks at three factors when deciding what rating to give restaurants and takeaways - hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and management of food safety.

The Costa store was given an "improvement necessary" rating for hygienic food handling, which looked at the preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage of the food.

They were also given an "improvement necessary" rating for cleanliness, which looked at the condition of facilities and building (including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control) to enable good food hygiene.

Finally they were given a "major improvement necessary" for the management of food safety, which looks to ensure that a system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, there is evidence that staff know about food safety and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.

A Costa Coffee spokesperson said: “Costa Coffee takes all food hygiene ratings extremely seriously and we were disappointed and concerned with the rating given to our Eboracum Drive-Thru store.

"Following the inspection, we took immediate action to rectify all concerns, including closing the store for a deep clean, installing new equipment, and retraining team members. We are applying to the local authority for a reinspection, which we are confident will find the store to be operating to a high standard of cleaning and hygiene once again.”
