Also, ingestion of food products prepared with liquid nitrogen can cause death. Drinking liquid nitrogen freezes the tissue and ruptures the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, a warning was given not to use it. In this case, the tamil Nadu government has warned that strict action will be taken against those who use liquid nitrogen in food products.
In this regard, the Commissioner of Food Safety has issued a press release: According to the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 and Regulations 2011, liquid nitrogen as a processing aid is only used for the freezing of food products such as dairy desserts and ice cream.Also Liquid Nitrogen can only be used as Packing Gas and Freezeant as per Food Safety and Standards (Quality of Food Products and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. Therefore, under Section 38(10) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the nominated officers and Food Safety Officers of the Food Safety Department are responsible for the sale of liquid nitrogen directly mixed with food products such as biscuits, ice cream, wafer biscuits, etc. Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 has been advised to take appropriate legal action.
