Punjab: Gangster Dilpreet Baba acquitted in arms and drugs case
Police failed to prove the recovery of weapons and drugs from the gangster

The Punjab Police faced a major setback after a local court acquitted gangster Dilpreet Singh, also known as Dilpreet Baba, in a case related to the possession of arms and drugs. The prosecution failed to substantiate its claims regarding the recovery of weapons and drugs, resulting in Baba’s acquittal.
The verdict was delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Harsimranjit Singh, who ruled in favour of the accused due to insufficient evidence supporting the alleged recovery. Baba’s lawyer, C S Bawa, argued that the recovery mentioned in the charge-sheet was “fabricated and could not be proven in court”.
The notorious gangster was arrested in June 2018 in a joint operation by Punjab and Chandigarh Police at Sector 43 ISBT. During the arrest, police claimed Baba was injured while attempting to escape and was shot in the leg. He was later admitted to the PGIMER for treatment. Following his arrest, he was booked under the Arms Act and for attempted murder in Mohali. The police also searched his residence in Sector 38, claiming to have recovered drugs. Additionally, weapons and ammunition were allegedly found in the car he was traveling in at the time of the encounter.
However, the police failed to provide conclusive evidence linking Baba to these recoveries, leading to his acquittal. This is not the first instance where Punjab Police has struggled to prove cases against gangsters.
In December 2024, Dilpreet Baba and his associate Sukhpreet Budha were acquitted in the Gippy Grewal extortion case. The police had accused them of threatening Punjabi singer and actor Gippy Grewal, warning him that he would meet the same fate as slain singer Amar Singh Chamkila and Punjabi artist Parmish Verma. On April 14, 2018, Grewal was reportedly shot and injured in an attack after refusing to pay extortion money
