An urgent product recall has been issued by Coca-Cola in the UK due to safety concerns that some cans may contain substances harmful to consumers' health.

The recall is focused on a select number of imported cans of Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke and Sprite Zero because they might have elevated chlorate levels. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said: "Long term consumption of chlorate can lead to the inhibition of iodine uptake, this could potentially cause adverse health effects such as goitre.

"A single high intake of chlorate, (as an acute exposure), could limit the body's ability to absorb oxygen from the blood, and could in severe cases lead to kidney failure."

Two batches of 6x250ml Appletiser multipacks imported into the country are also among the products subject to recall. Coca-Cola has flagged these products as possible risks, particularly for those with chlorate sensitivity or iodine deficiencies.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) has assured consumers that standard size cans, as well as all glass and plastic bottles in the UK, remain unaffected by the recall. Only products with production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE fall within the scope of this recall, reports the Mirror.

The products affected by the recall include:

- Appletiser 100 percent Apple Juice Gently Sparkling: Pack size 6 X 250ml multipack; Batch code - 0008905850 0008908477; Best before dates - 30 November 2025 and 31 December 2025.

- Coca-Cola: Pack size - 330ml tall can; Batch code - 0008912462; Best before date - 30 November 2025.

- Diet Coke: Pack Size: 330ml tall can - Batch code: 0008913820 Best before: 31 May 2025.

- Coca Cola Zero: Pack Size: 330ml tall can - Batch code: 0008913954 - Best before: 31 May 2025.

- Sprite Zero: Pack Size: 330ml tall can - Batch code: Batch code 0008913247 - Best before: 30 June 2025.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has advised anyone who has purchased these products not to consume them. Instead, customers should contact Coca-Cola's customer service team on 0800 2277711 for further assistance.

This warning follows an urgent recall issued by Tesco for its Free From meals after it was discovered that a key ingredient had not been declared. The FSA announced this week that "undeclared soya" in the products posed a "possible health risk" for tens of thousands of people, particularly children.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the FSA revealed that the soya content is not mentioned on two Free From meal boxes, namely the Tesco Free From Katsu Curry and Tesco Free From Sweet and Sour Meal Kits.

Tesco's recall notice is an allergy alert advising those who have consumed the meal kits to seek medical advice, as the omission of the ingredient could prove fatal for those with soya allergies. Symptoms of a soya allergy can include severe reactions such as diarrhoea, vomiting and anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening if left untreated.

Tesco has issued an urgent recall for certain products with specific best before dates, instructing customers to return them immediately. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said: "Tesco is recalling the above products from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall. The company has also issued a recall notice to its customers."
