A new Lounge cafe and steak restaurant could soon open according to new plans recently submitted. Each week Bristol City Council receives dozens of planning applications seeking permission for a whole range of developments.
Over the past seven days, those applications also included a giant totem pole and swapping old phone boxes for advertising screens. Here’s this week’s round-up of notable planning applications submitted to the council.
Every week dozens are validated by the local authority and we have selected some of the more interesting proposals. All planning applications submitted to the council have to be validated and are available for inspection by the public. Anyone is also allowed to submit comments about the applications — whether in support or objection.
The majority of applications are decided by planning officers at the council under delegated powers. However, some will go before elected councillors who sit on planning committees. No dates have been set for when the planning applications below will be determined. They can be viewed by going to the planning portal on Bristol City Council’s website.
New Lounge cafe on Church Road
A new Lounge cafe could open up on Church Road in Redfield. Loungers Ltd has applied for planning permission to install signs on a property on the corner of Roseberry Park, formerly home to a bargain shop. The cafe would be called Rubino Lounge.
The first Lounge opened in Bristol, on North Street in Bedminster. Since then, the chain has expanded across the country, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, and alcohol drinks too. Ritorno Lounge recently opened up in a prime spot on the Harbourside.
Steak restaurant in city centre
A steak restaurant could open up in the city centre. Flat Iron Steak Ltd has applied for planning permission to put up signs on a building on Clare Street, which is currently occupied by Four Wise Monkeys, an Asian restaurant. Flat Iron Steak also has restaurants in London, Manchester, Leeds and Cambridge.
In planning documents, the applicants said: “We principally serve beef grown in extensive or regenerative systems, typically raised on small family run farms in the UK and Ireland. We favour traditional breeds and longer, slower rearing that yields marbling in the meat and juiciness and flavour in the steak.
“Like everyone we are conscious of the effect we are having on the planet and the need to tread as lightly as possible. We are learning how cattle can be used as part of a mixed system to regenerate soils and increase carbon content, but we certainly don’t have all the answers.
“What we do know is that eating less, better quality beef, that is fully traceable and has assured welfare standards, feels like the right thing to us. Remarkable steak, accessible to all, passionate people and love. It’s where we started, where we are and where we firmly hope to stay.”
Giant chicken totem pole
A giant six-metre totem pole could be installed at Avonmeads Retail Park with a sign for the new Popeyes chicken restaurant. Popeyes opens on Friday, April 11, in the former Krispy Kreme branch, and will be the first one in Bristol. The American chicken chain was founded in 1971 and has been recently expanding into the UK.
Swapping phone boxes for advertising
Two BT payphones in Fishponds could be removed and replaced with a ‘street hub’ and digital advertising screens. The payphones on Straits Parade have become redundant. BT is replacing many public payphones with new “street hubs”, that as well as carry advertising also provide free wifi to passersby, free phonecalls and device charging.
