As more research associates skin microbiome with skin health, ageing and numerous skin conditions, this is a space the beauty industry is watching keenly.
Companies such as Unilever and L’Oréal have both previously spoken to CosmeticsDesign-Europe about how they view this topic as important in future skin care innovation, and there is also ongoing innovation in the oral care, deodorants and hair care categories.
Here we take a look at some of the most recent microbiome-based beauty and personal care ingredients launches.
Antimicrobial for acne-prone skin
Brenntag’s Lactive is the bioactivated form of lactoferrin, a natural milk protein with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. It helps to rebalance the skin’s microbiome, which the company says makes it “ideal for acne-prone skin.”
According to Alessandra Gozzi from Brenntag Specialties Beauty & Personal Care EMEA, the ingredient works by “strengthening the skin barrier, soothing irritation, and providing antimicrobial protection.”
Rebalances scalp microbiota
To create Capixyl, Lucas Meyer Cosmetics by Clariant has combined a biomimetic signal peptide and a red clover flower extract, which it says “work synergistically to limit hair loss and enhance growth.”
The ingredient is said to rebalance scalp microbiota, modulate DHT level, decrease inflammation and to improve hair formation and anchoring.
Sheet mask for the vulva
Italian probiotics research and production company Probiotical has launched a special sheet mask for the vulva area, which uses postbiotics to calm and soothe irritation.
Paolo Saronni, who works in product development at the company, explained that the mask takes around 20 minutes to take effect and has been in-vivo tested in Italy on a group of 20 female participants.
Supports skin immune function
Lallemand’s Lallbiome 200 includes Lactobacillus Helveticus HA122, a heat-inactivated postbiotic that “helps manage the effects of zombie cells by reducing harmful inflammatory signals and supporting the skin’s overall immune function,” according to the firm.
At the show, Lallemand also showcased Juneo, a biotech trans-resveratrol that helps to reduce signs of ageing, noting that its “in vivo and ex vivo studies show that trans-resveratrol plays a crucial role in regulating genes involved in skin health and ageing.”
For sensitive, atopic skin
Obtained by bio-fermentation of Pseudozyma flocculosa, Solabia’s Serenibiome is a 100%-natural, patented active ingredient designed for sensitive skin prone to atopy.
The ingredient is bio-inspired by epiphytic fungus, Pseudozyma flocculosa, which “maintains a healthy ecological niche through the release of a powerful glycolipid: the flocculosin,” according to the company.
Microbiome-friendly UVB filter
DSM-Firmenich has innovated in the sun care space with the creation of Parsol SLX, which is a microbiome-friendly UVB filter for maximum sun protection.
The company has also put a focus on creating an enjoyable sensory experience for this ingredient.
Strengthens and regenerates acne-prone skin
Formulated with patented probiotics and upcycled apple peel extract, OQEMA Group’s BlockACNE is designed to “strengthen the skin’s natural defences and promote regeneration.”
The ingredients company said the innovation offers strong growth-inhibiting effect against C. acnes bacteria, the expression of TNF-α and LI-8, the major causes of acne and inflammation.
