NFL reaches major $23 billion milestone with league on course for Roger Goodell’s 2027 target

THE NFL has passed a major financial milestone and remains on course to hit Roger Goodell's target.

The league generated $23 billion in the last fiscal year, according to Sports Business Journal.

And that keeps the 2027 target set by commissioner Goodell in sight.

The NFL boss made an ambitious statement way back in 2010.

He wanted the league to generate $25 billion annually by 2027.

At the time, NFL revenue stood at around $8 billion per season.

New media rights deals and gambling have been a key part of the league's growth.

Gambling has become legal in more states.

And the NFL has profited from deals with the likes of Draft Kings and FanDuel.

The league has also added new more broadcast slots and agreed new deals in recent years.

Thursday Night Football began tentatively during the back end of the 2006 season.

It has now become a $1 billion-a-year partnership with Amazon Prime.

The streaming giant shows a game on Black Friday in addition to the TNF clashes.

Their rivals Netflix also entered a deal with the league to show a double-header on Christmas.

CBS, Fox, NBC and ESPN are also broadcast partners of the league.

The media rights deals signed in 2021 were worth $111 billion over 11 years.

This year's Super Bowl on Fox was the most watched in history.

More than 127 million fans tuned in to see the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Kansas City Chiefs.

The NFL has also benefited from appealing to new fans thanks to Taylor Swift's relationship with Travis Kelce.

The pop megastar has brought young females to the game.

There has also been a huge effort to increase global efforts in recent years.

The first NFL regular-season game outside the US was played in London, England in 2007.

In 2025 there will be games across England, Germany, Ireland, Spain and Brazil with Australia to follow next year.
