Home Office - Statement of Intent Regarding Settled Status

Back to list of articles

The Home Office has confirmed today that they intend to publish the statement of intent regarding settled status tomorrow morning, following a Ministerial oral statement in the House (at around 10.30am). Settled Status will provide EU nationals, who are in the UK prior to 30 December 2020, the right to stay in the UK, work and access public funds and services for themselves and their family members after the UK leaves the EU in March 2019.

The statement of intent will be accompanied by the draft rules, allowing for further feedback and discussion of these with Government before they going before Parliament in July 2018.

It is likely that statement will bring together much of what has previously been announced and the FDF settled status toolkit will be updated accordingly. We anticipate the statement will bring further clarity regarding the cost of applying for settled status but it will not go as far as providing an employer toolkit, which will be launched later this summer. FDF have prepared the following reactive statement:

Angela Coleshill, FDF Competitiveness Director said:

“It is welcome that the Government has now issued a formal statement of intent and draft rules for the new settled status system. We will be looking at both carefully to ensure they meet the needs of our industry. Food and drink manufacturing employs 117,000 highly valued EU workers, making up almost a third of our workforce. These workers play a vital role in guaranteeing the success of the £112 billion 'farm to fork' food chain and their contribution to our sector is vital.

“Businesses and EU citizens have been calling for certainty and this is a positive step forward. The next stage will be to make sure the process is swiftly and effectively communicated to those EU citizens looking to stay in the UK, and that employers are provided with the tools needed to support their workforce.”
